What is an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is an official document issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that permits foreign nationals who are lawfully present in the United States to be able to work. In South Carolina, an EAD may be required for certain immigrants who are seeking to remain lawfully in the U.S. and to be able to obtain employment. It may also be required for those who are seeking to adjust their status. An EAD grants temporary authorization to work during a specific period of time and it does not provide permanent residency or citizenship status. The document authorizes the holder to be able to work in the United States for a specified period of time. It does not guarantee an individual the right to remain in the United States and does not authorize any individual to stay in the U.S. beyond the period of time stated on the document. EADs may also be used in certain cases to avoid deportation for those foreign nationals that are in the United States without valid immigration status. If an individual can demonstrate to the USCIS that they have the necessary qualifications to obtain an EAD and will be able to satisfy the requirements of the EAD, then they may be able to avoid deportation. EADs are important documents that allow certain foreign nationals to work in the United States legally. It is important for individuals to understand the requirements for obtaining an EAD and to be aware of the consequences of not following the requirements of the document. In South Carolina, EADs play an important role in immigration law and it is important for those seeking lawful authorization to understand how to apply for and maintain valid EAD status.
