What is a “reasonable fear” interview?

A “reasonable fear” interview is an interview conducted by US immigration authorities to determine if an individual entering the US without proper documents has a “credible fear” of returning to their home country. This interview is an important step in qualifying for asylum in the US. During the interview, the individual is asked a series of questions to determine if they have a “reasonable fear” of persecution or harm in their home country. In Texas, individuals must prove they have a “well-founded fear” of persecution in their home country due to their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or their political opinion. If they can prove this, their request for asylum in the US can be granted. During the interview, the individual is expected to provide pertinent information and evidence to prove they have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country. The asylum officer will then evaluate the information and decide if the applicant has a reasonable fear of persecution. If the officer determines the individual does have a reasonable fear, the individual can be granted asylum in the US.
