What is the R-1 visa?

The R-1 visa is a type of U.S. work visa for certain religious workers in Tennessee. It is available to persons who work as a minister of religion, or in a professional capacity in a religious vocation or occupation. To qualify, the individual must have been a member of a religious denomination for two years and must be coming to Tennessee to work for a non-profit religious organization. The visa holder can stay in Tennessee for a period of up to five years, and can travel in and out of the U.S. during this time. The visa holder must work exclusively for the sponsoring employer and must include a job description outlining the duties and requirements of the job. In addition to providing proof of qualifications for the job, the individual must also provide evidence that they are a member of a religious denomination. This can include a letter from a clergy member or other religious leader. The individual must also prove that there are no U.S. workers who are qualified, willing, and available to perform the job and that the hiring of the foreign worker will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of U.S. workers similarly employed.
