What is an L-1A visa?

An L-1A visa is a type of work visa for foreign immigrants who wish to work in Virginia. It is a non-immigrant visa that allows multinational companies to transfer foreign executives or managers to their companies in the United States. The employee must have worked with the transferring company for at least one year in the last three years in a managerial or executive role, usually abroad. The purpose of the L-1A visa is to allow foreign companies to transfer foreign executives or managers to their U.S. operations, to help facilitate global business. The employees may be sent to the U.S. to work in a new office or branch of the company or to manage an existing U.S. office. The stay in the U.S. is initially granted for up to three years, and may be extended in two-year increments for up to five years in total. The employee’s spouse and unmarried children (under age 21) are eligible to accompany the foreign executive or manager to the United States. The L-1A visa is an essential part of immigration law in Virginia, helping to facilitate business between Virginia and foreign companies. It also provides the means for non-U.S. citizens to enter the U.S. and work in a managerial or executive role, which is beneficial to the Virginia economy.
