What is an adjustment of status?

An adjustment of status is a process available to some immigrants living in the United States. People in the US who are eligible to adjust status from one immigration category to another, are able to do so without leaving the country. In the state of Illinois, this process is available to those who are already in the United States and who are eligible to adjust their current immigration status to that of a person lawfully permitted to work in America. This status is commonly referred to as an “employment authorization”. Those eligible to adjust status in this way must meet certain requirements, such as having been inspected and admitted or paroled into the US. There are a few different options available through the adjustment of status process. Those eligible may be able to either adjust their status to a lawful permanent resident, obtain permission to permanently live and work in the US through a green card, or receive temporary permission to live and work in the US through an Employment Authorization Document. Adjustment of status is an important process for those immigrants living in the state of Illinois who are looking to obtain permission to work legally in the United States. It provides a pathway for these individuals to gain employment authorization if they are eligible under the US immigration laws and allows them to remain in the country without having to leave and re-enter.
