What is an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is a document issued by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that allows authorized individuals to work in the United States. The document is also known as a “work permit”. Depending on the individual’s situation, an EAD may be issued for varying lengths of time, from one year up to three years. In Massachusetts, an individual may be eligible for an EAD through an immigration law program for families. Generally, these programs are designed to assist immediate family members of US citizens or permanent residents to gain legal status in the US and to work legally. In order to be eligible, the family member must have a valid immigration status and have an approved immigration petition. Once the individual has the necessary documents and has passed all the background checks, they must then apply for their Employment Authorization Document. This is done by filing Form I-765 with USCIS. Once approved, the individual will receive the EAD with their name, Social Security number, and the expiration date of the document. The individual can then use the EAD to work legally in the US until the expiration date specified on the document.
