What is an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is a document that allows some foreign nationals to work legally in the United States. These documents are issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a federal agency responsible for immigration matters. An EAD can be issued to individuals who are in the United States on a work-based nonimmigrant visa, such as an H-1B or L visa. In Washington, foreign nationals who are the family members of an authorized worker who is residing in the state lawfully may be eligible to receive an EAD. The EAD will allow the family member to work lawfully in the state. The EAD will be valid for a certain period of time and the individual must renew their authorization once it expires. In addition, the family member must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the EAD, such as having an approved employer-sponsored visa or have a qualifying family relationship. An EAD is an important document for individuals who are trying to obtain legal employment in the United States. It ensures that they are able to work lawfully in the state of Washington, even if they are not a permanent resident.
