What is an asylum application?

An asylum application is a request for protection from an individual who is seeking refuge from persecution in their home country. This type of application falls under the U.S. immigration law for family immigration in Massachusetts. In order to be eligible for asylum in the United States, applicants must demonstrate that they have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country. The persecution they must be afraid of must be based on one of five factors: race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. When submitting an asylum application, applicants must provide evidence to support their claim of persecution. This evidence can include written documentation of any kind of harm or violence they have suffered or are likely to suffer, as well as any social or political activities they have engaged in that may have put them in danger. Asylum applicants must also provide proof of identity, such as a passport, and a detailed explanation of why they cannot return to their home country. The asylum application process is long and complicated, so it is important to seek legal advice when considering filing for asylum. A qualified immigration attorney can assess an applicant’s situation and explain the process of filing an asylum application. The attorney can also help prepare and submit the necessary paperwork and provide the best strategy to help applicants obtain asylum in Massachusetts.
