What is the process for renewing a green card?
The process for renewing a green card in California depends on the type of green card and your immigration status. Generally, if you have already obtained permanent residency, you will need to fill out Form I-90, the Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. On this form, you must include your Alien Registration Number, which can be found on the front of your current green card. You will also need to provide documentation that proves your identity, residence, and legal status in the United States. You must also send in the fee for processing the application, which is currently $540. You may also need to provide evidence that shows you still meet the eligibility requirements for permanent residency, such as a copy of your marriage license or proof that you have not been convicted of a crime. Once your application has been received, you will receive a notice in the mail that your green card renewal is being processed. Depending on your current immigration status, you may need to attend an interview at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) field office. At the interview, the officer will review your application and you will be asked questions to verify your identity. Finally, upon approval, you will receive a new green card, valid for the next 10 years. When it is time to renew your green card again, you can start the process over again by submitting Form I-90.
