What is the process for applying for an advance parole?

In Washington, the process for applying for advance parole as part of family immigration law is relatively straightforward. To begin, the individual must have a pending Adjustment of Status (AOS) application with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This application must already be submitted in order to apply for advance parole. After the AOS application is submitted, the individual can submit the the USCIS Form I-131. This document is used to apply for both advance parole as well as a travel document. The application must include evidence and documentation in support of the individual’s claim that they need to travel for a special purpose. It may take the USCIS up to three months to approve the application. In the event that the individual is traveling with a minor or someone else who is applying for advance parole, a separate application must be filed and additional documents may be required. Once approved, the individual will receive an Advance Parole Document and will be able to travel abroad. It is important to note that the individual must have permission to re-enter the United States and must carry their Advance Parole Document when returning. Failure to do so may result in deportation.
