What is the process for a fiancé(e) to become a US citizen?

The process for a fiancé(e) to become a US citizen in Washington starts with a resident of the US, who is a citizen or lawful permanent resident, filing the Petition for Alien Fiancé(e) (Form I-129F) with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This petition allows an individual to bring his or her foreign-born fiancé(e) to the US for the purpose of getting married. In order for the petition to be approved, the US resident must provide evidence that he or she is a lawful US citizen or resident and have a valid US passport. He or she must also provide proof that the US resident and the foreign-born fiancé(e) have met in person in the past two years or demonstrate that a meeting would create excessive hardships. After the petition is approved, the foreign-born fiancé(e) will receive a K-1 visa and have 6 months to arrive and marry the US resident. Once married, the foreign-born fiancé(e) can submit the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485) to apply for permanent residence. When the application is approved, the foreign-born fiancé(e) will receive a conditional permanent resident status which is valid for 2 years. After 2 years, they can then apply to remove the condition on their residence by filing the Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence (Form I-751) and submit evidence of the validity of their marriage. Approval of this petition allows the foreign-born fiancé(e) to become a lawful permanent resident. After 5 years of continuous residence, the foreign-born fiancé(e) can then apply for US citizenship.
