How do I apply for an adjustment of status?
An adjustment of status is a special process that allows certain individuals to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States, also known as a green card holder. In Washington, any foreign national that is the spouse of a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident may be eligible to apply for an adjustment of status. The first step in applying for an adjustment of status is to gather the necessary documents. This includes birth certificates, marriage certificates, medical examination records, passport photographs, and other supporting documents. After gathering the documents, you must file Form I-130, which is a petition to classify an alien relative as an immediate relative of a U.S. citizen. The next step is to file Form I-485, which is an application to register permanent residence. The third step in the process is to attend a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, the applicant will submit their fingerprints, photograph, and signature. Once this appointment is complete, the individual must complete an interview with an immigration official. During the interview, the immigration official will ask questions about the applicant’s background to verify their eligibility for an adjustment of status. Once the interview is complete, the applicant will be notified of their status. If approved, the individual can then move forward with the process of obtaining a green card.
