What is the purpose of a motion for reconsideration in an international court?

A motion for reconsideration is a legal request made to an international court or tribunal to review and reconsider a prior decision that was made during the course of a legal proceeding. The purpose of a motion for reconsideration is to give the court or tribunal an opportunity to take another look at the facts and the arguments presented by both parties, and possibly make a different decision from the one previously made. In order for a motion for reconsideration to be successful, the person making the request must show that there is a new and important fact that was not available or presented in the initial hearing. This new fact must be based on evidence that was not available or considered before the court issued its decision. Additionally, the person making the request must show that this new fact was not known or discoverable on the date the court issued its decision. In Alaska, the Alaska Court System has adopted Federal Rules of Civil Procedure rule 59(e), which allows courts to reconsider or change their prior judgments or orders. If a motion for reconsideration is successful, the court will modify or set aside their original decision and enter a new judgment or order. By offering the opportunity to reconsider a previous decision, a motion for reconsideration allows attorneys and their clients to have the best chance at achieving justice in International litigation in Alaska.
