When can I apply for naturalization if I got my green card through marriage?

If you got your green card through marriage, you may be eligible to apply for naturalization, or U.S. citizenship, after 3 years. In California, you can apply for naturalization 90 days before you complete the 3 years as a legal permanent resident. There are certain family-based immigration requirements set by the U.S. government in order to become a U.S. citizen and they include having a valid marriage to a U.S. citizen, as well as having a green card, or permanent residence. To be eligible to apply for naturalization, you must first be a permanent U.S. resident for at least 3 years and meet other requirements, such as being able to read, write, and speak English and having good moral character. You will also need to provide evidence of the following: that you have been married for at least 3 years and the marriage is still valid, that you still have a valid green card, that you have lived in the same state in the United States for the last 3 years without leaving for more than 6 months at a time, and that you are a person of good moral character. Once you have met these requirements, you can apply for naturalization. You will have to fill out an application and submit proof of eligibility, including documents showing your permanent resident status and your valid marriage. Depending on your situation, you may also need to provide additional documents, such as proof of your residency in the United States, proof of your good moral character, and more.
