When can I apply for naturalization if I got my green card through marriage?

If you got your green card through marriage, you may be eligible to apply for naturalization in Washington after 3 years. To be eligible for naturalization after 3 years, you must have been married to a U.S. citizen for at least 3 years and your spouse must have been a U.S. citizen for that same time, and you must still be married to the same U.S. citizen. You also must have lived in Washington within the last three years and been physically present in the U.S. for at least 18 months during the last 3 years before submitting your application. Additionally, you must show that you have been a person of “good moral character” during that time. You also must pass the English and civics tests to qualify for naturalization. The English test requires a basic understanding of the English language, such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening. The civics test requires a knowledge of U.S. history, geography, and government. Finally, you must take the oath of allegiance to the United States and must be willing to defend the Constitution and to bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law. If you fulfill these requirements and are approved for naturalization, you will receive a certificate of naturalization and become a U.S. citizen.
