How do I apply for citizenship if I am a legal permanent resident?
In order to become a U.S. citizen if you are a legal permanent resident of South Dakota you must first apply for naturalization. Naturalization is the process through which a non-citizens can become a U.S. citizen. In order to apply for naturalization, you must first have been a permanent resident of the United States for at least five years (three years if you are married to a U.S. citizen). You must also prove that you have “good moral character” and have knowledge of the English language. Additionally, you must demonstrate that you are capable of understanding and appreciating the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution. You can apply for naturalization by completing and submitting either Form N-400 or Form N-600 with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You’ll also need to pay a filing fee, attend an interview with a USCIS officer, and take an oath of allegiance to the United States. Once your application has been approved and you have taken the oath of allegiance, you will be a citizen of the United States. As a citizen, you will have the right to live and work in the U.S. without worries of deportation, the right to vote, and access to certain government services. To get the most up-to-date information on naturalization and other South Dakota’s immigration laws, you should contact the South Dakota Department of Services for more details.
