What is the difference between an immigrant and non-immigrant visa?
In Washington State, the difference between an immigrant and non-immigrant visa relates to the length of time an individual is allowed to remain in the U.S. An immigrant visa is granted to individuals whose intention is to live in the U.S. long-term. Upon approval, they become a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and are allowed to remain in the country for an indefinite period of time, pending any changes to their immigration status. On the other hand, a nonimmigrant visa is intended for those who only plan to stay in the U.S. for a limited amount of time. This type of visa is typically granted to individuals who are visiting the U.S. for educational, business, or vacation purposes. With a non-immigrant visa, the individual is generally authorized to stay in the U.S. for a set period of time. Marriage immigration is yet another type of visa. This type of visa is granted to individuals who wish to come to the U.S. to live with a spouse who is either a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. The individual applying for the marriage immigration visa needs to prove that they are in a relationship by providing evidence of marriage and other documentation. Once the visa is granted, the individual is allowed to remain in the U.S. and has the option to apply for legal permanent residency in the future.
