How do I apply for a green card if I am married to a permanent resident?

If you are married to a permanent resident (known as a green card holder) and living in West Virginia, you may be eligible to obtain a green card. In order to do so, you must file the proper paperwork with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The first step in the process is to complete and submit Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative. This form must be signed by the permanent resident spouse and include evidence of the marriage, such as copies of a marriage certificate, a joint lease, or joint bank statements. After Form I-130 has been approved, you will need to submit Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. This form requires evidence of your eligibility, including proof of your identity and proof that you are legally able to stay in the U.S. Once your application has been approved, you will receive a green card in the mail. You will be required to attend an interview at the local USCIS office to verify the details of your application. Once the interview is complete and approved, you will be issued a green card that will allow you to legally stay in the U.S. and work in West Virginia.
