What is the process for applying for a temporary resident card?
In Virginia, the process for applying for a temporary resident card is similar to that of most other states. The first step is to submit a Form I-539, Application to Change/Extend Nonimmigrant Status, to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form is used to apply for different types of temporary resident cards (TRC). Next, applicants must complete an I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, and submit any required supporting documents. This form is used to request authorization to work in the United States while a TRC application is being processed. The last step is to submit a Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, which is necessary in order to travel with the TRC. This form is also required to stay outside of the United States for more than one year. Once all the necessary forms and documents have been submitted, they will be reviewed by USCIS. The applicant will then be informed of their decision in writing, and will be able to receive their temporary resident card after their application has been approved.
