What is the process to become a permanent resident of the US?
In Texas, the process to become a permanent resident of the United States involves several steps. The first step is to be admitted to the U.S. lawfully as a nonimmigrant, refugee, or asylee. Next, a person must obtain a Permanent Resident Card, or green card. This can be done in a few ways. The most common way is to have a family member who is a US citizen or permanent resident sponsor you. The sponsoring family member must fill out USCIS Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, and file it with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Other applicants can apply for a green card through an employment authorization, marriage, asylum or refugee status, or a variety of other family or financial circumstances. Once the I-130 form is approved, the individual must then wait for an immigrant visa number to become available. This usually takes several months or even years. Once the visa number becomes available, the individual must fill out the relevant visa application and submit it to the appropriate US consulate or embassy. The visa application must include documentation of the visa applicant’s eligibility to become a permanent resident. The visa applicant will then have to attend an interview at the consulate or embassy, where they will be asked questions about their application. If all is well, the visa application will be approved and the individual can enter the US as a permanent resident. Once the individual arrives in the US, they must then fill out a permanent residency application and submit it to the USCIS. Once the permanent residency application is approved, the individual can begin their life in the United States as a permanent resident. Every permanent resident must maintain their residency status by following all the laws and regulations of the US, including filing taxes and being aware of their rights and obligations to the US and Texas.
