What is the Naturalization Process?

The naturalization process is the process a foreign-born individual goes through to become a U.S. citizen. In Texas, if you are a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), you must fulfill certain requirements in order to become a naturalized citizen. First, LPRs must prove to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that they are of good moral character. Applicants must be 18 or older and they must also pass a civics test on U.S. history and government. Next, applicants must fill out an application for naturalization (Form N-400) and submit supporting documents. These documents may include proof of residency and copies of federal and state tax returns. After submitting the application, USCIS will review the form and documents, as well as conduct an interview. During the interview, you will be asked questions about your application and background information. Once the application is approved and all other requirements are met, you will be required to take the Oath of Allegiance. This oath is taken at a naturalization ceremony and involves making a promise to defend the Constitution and to obey the laws of the United States. Upon completion of the Oath, you will officially become a naturalized citizen of the United States. As a U.S. citizen, you will have the right to vote, get a U.S. passport, and access certain government services.
