The process to apply for citizenship in Washington is determined by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the government agency responsible for immigration and naturalization. Generally, the process requires those applying for citizenship to first be a permanent resident, have lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident for five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), be able to speak, read, and write basic English, and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government. Once these requirements are met, the individual can apply for Naturalization, the process to become a U.S. citizen. This process includes completing and submitting Form N-400, Application for Naturalization; providing proof of residence, income, and employment; providing a copy of a valid ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or birth certificate; undergoing an interview; and taking the U.S. citizenship test, also known as the civics test. The civics test is a requirement for all applicants and consists of questions about U.S. government and history, as well as a written and reading comprehension of the English language. Applicants are given up to 10 questions, and must answer at least 6 questions correctly to pass the test. Once all the requirements are met and the test is passed, the individual can be sworn in as a U.S. citizen. The sworn-in ceremony consists of taking an Oath of Allegiance, during which the individual promises to support the Constitution of the United States of America and unconditionally defend the nation. After the Oath of Allegiance, the individual receives a Certificate of Naturalization and completes the process to become a U.S. citizen.
