How much does a green card cost?
A green card, also known as a permanent resident card, cost $1,760 as of 2020. This fee includes the application cost of $1,140 and biometric services fee of $620. Before applying for a green card, other costs such as travel expenses, medical exam fees, and travel document fees may also need to be taken into consideration. In Virginia, the permanent residence or green card can be obtained if the individual is already a lawful permanent resident of the United States. This is typically accomplished through a process of family-based immigration or employment-based immigration. If a person is seeking to become a permanent resident based on marriage to a U.S. citizen, they must submit Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, and all applicable supporting documents. In addition to the basic application fee, there may be other fee associated with the application process. If a person is applying for adjustment of status, then the fee for a biometric services appointment must be paid to the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). Additional costs for an Affidavit of Support Form and other supporting documents may also be necessary. Finally, if the individual is applying for permanent residency in Virginia through employment, then an American Immigration Lawyer may need to be consulted, in addition to filing the required forms. This may include more applications and fees, depending on the nature of the case.
