What documents do I need to naturalize?
In Virginia, there are certain documents that must be submitted in order to apply for naturalization. The necessary documents to naturalize can vary depending on the individual. Generally, however, the required documents to naturalize fall into six categories: 1. Evidence of continuous residence in the United States; 2. Evidence of physical presence in the US; 3. Evidence of good moral character; 4. Evidence of knowledge of the English language and U.S. Government and history; 5. Evidence of attachment to the US Constitution; and 6. Evidence of attachment to the US Government. Evidence of continuous residence in the US must demonstrate that an individual has resided in the US for at least 5 years prior to application, or 3 years prior to application if the individual is married to a US citizen. Evidence of physical presence must show that the individual has been physically present in the US for at least 30 months during the 5 or 3 year period. Evidence of good moral character must include affidavits, testimony, or other documents that demonstrate that the individual is of good moral character. Evidence of knowledge of the English language and U.S. Government and history must demonstrate that the individual has passed a civics and English test. Evidence of attachment to the US Constitution must include an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. and renouncement of all former allegiances. And, finally, evidence of attachment to the US Government must include a statement of the individual’s intent to abide by and support the U.S. Constitution and all laws of the United States. These documents are required for naturalization in Virginia.
