What is a refugee Visa?

A refugee visa is a document that allows a person to enter the United States to seek protection from persecution. This type of visa is granted to people who have been persecuted in their country of origin due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or social group. The individual must demonstrate a fear of persecution based on one of these categories in order to be eligible for a refugee visa. The U.S. Department of State is responsible for granting refugee status, which can be done through embassies, consulates, and refugee admissions programs. A person may be eligible for refugee status if he or she has a well-founded fear of being persecuted for any of the above-mentioned reasons, has suffered serious harm, or is unable to return home. Refugees are granted residence in the United States for at least one year. After one year, they can apply for permanent residency. To apply for permanent resident status, refugees must file Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. The application must also be accompanied by certain documents proving their refugee status, such as a passport, birth certificate, and any other forms of identification. Refugees may also be eligible to apply for a Green Card, or lawful permanent resident status. A Green Card allows refugees to live and work in the United States, as well as to travel back and forth from their home country. While refugee status does not automatically confer U.S. citizenship, it is the first step in the arduous process of becoming a U.S. citizen.
