What is the F-1 student visa program?

The F-1 student visa program is a type of non-immigrant visa provided to help international students come to the United States to pursue educational opportunities. F-1 student visas are issued by the U.S. Department of State and allow international students to study at approved schools, including colleges, universities, non-degree granting programs, and other academic institutions. In Maryland, those approved by the Department of State to provide educational services to F-1 students include colleges and universities, language schools, flight training schools, occupational or vocational schools, and some non-degree-granting programs. In order to receive an F-1 student visa, the student must first receive an I-20 form from the academic institution. This form serves as the student’s request to enter the United States and must be signed by the school’s designated school official. After the student has completed their application for the visa, they must then attend a visa interview at a U.S. Embassy or consulate. If the student’s visa is approved, they will be able to come to the United States to study. F-1 students must adhere to the regulations of their visa status in order to remain in the U.S. These regulations include maintaining the enrollment status in the educational program; continuing work toward a successful completion of a full course of study; and following all other rules, such as being enrolled in and taking a full course of study each academic period and not working without permission. Furthermore, F-1 students must plan their visas to ensure that they are valid and up-to-date throughout their stay in the U.S. Failure to comply with F-1 visa rules and regulations may lead to deportation from the U.S.
