What is an M-1 student visa?
An M-1 student visa is a type of non-immigrant student visa issued by the United States to foreign citizens who wish to pursue a vocational or non-academic program in Washington. This visa is used for students interested in pursuing trade, technical, or other non-academic programs in their field of study. The application for an M-1 student visa requires the student to submit proof of financial support, proof of acceptance into a suitable program of study, and a passport with valid expiration date. Once the application is approved, the student is granted permission to stay in the United States for up to one year, with the option to apply for a one-year extension at the end of the initial period. In Washington, eligible students can obtain an M-1 student visa after enrolling in a vocational or other educational program sponsored by an approved school. The student must then maintain a full-time course of study with the approved school. Instructions for obtaining an M-1 student visa can be found on the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website. At the end of their educational program, the student must either apply for another type of visa in order to stay in the country or return to their home country. For students who wish to remain in the United States, it is important to maintain a valid student visa at all time while in the country. Failure to do so may result in deportation.
