What is an H-2B visa?
An H-2B visa is a U.S. employment visa for nonimmigrants who are coming to the United States to work temporarily in a “specialty occupation” or as a seasonal or temporary worker. An H-2B visa allows a student from Washington to come to the United States to work for a limited period of time in a job that does not require a college or university degree. These jobs can include hospitality, landscaping, food service, amusement parks, and forestry. The H-2B visa is issued to the student upon proof of need and other criteria. This includes providing evidence that the student is qualified to perform the duties of the position they are applying for and has obtained the necessary qualifications. The employer must also demonstrate that they are unable to fill the job with a U.S. worker. In order to apply for an H-2B visa, the student must provide the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with proof of employment and evidence of their qualifications. This includes a valid passport, evidence of holding a degree or a certificate from a college or university, and a job offer letter from their employer. The process for obtaining an H-2B visa can take several weeks or months, depending on the number of applications USCIS is processing.
