What is a diversity visa?
A diversity visa is a type of visa offered through an annual lottery program by the U.S. Department of State. This visa program helped to diversify the immigrant population in the U.S. and attract foreign immigrants from countries with low rates of immigration to the U.S. in the previous five years. The chance of being selected to receive a diversity visa is on a first-come, first-served basis and the Department of State randomly selects applicants for the visa program each year. Applicants must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as having a high school education or its equivalent, and having two years of work experience within the last five years in an occupation requiring at least two years of training or experience. In Washington, diversity visas are particularly beneficial for international students as it allows them to obtain a visa with sponsorship from a family member or employer. Additionally, the diversity visa program provides an opportunity for international students to potentially become residents of the United States, and eventually citizens. This opportunity could potentially open up more job and educational opportunities for international students in the state of Washington.
