What is an L-1 visa?

An L-1 visa is a type of nonimmigrant visa which allows certain foreign nationals to enter the United States in order to work or to continue working for a company that already has operations in the United States. This visa also allows the foreign employee to transfer to a branch, affiliate, or subsidiary of the same company in the U.S. In Pennsylvania, an L-1 visa holder can stay in the country for a maximum of five years. During this time, the holder will be able to work in the United States and have the right to bring their immediate family members with them. However, the family members will not be allowed to work and will have to get their own visa. In order to be eligible for an L-1 visa, the applicant must show proof that they have been employed abroad by the sponsoring company for at least one year within the three years preceding the application. Moreover, the applicant must plan to work for the same company in the United States and the job in the U.S. must be a managerial or executive role. They must also plan to support themselves during the stay and not rely on public funds. For those wishing to pursue further education in Pennsylvania, students may also be eligible for an L-1 visa depending on their situation. For example, if the student can show that their education is relevant to the job they will be doing with the sponsoring company and that their study is of benefit to the company, they may be able to apply for an L-1 visa.
