How does the Visa Waiver Program work?
The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is an agreement between the United States and certain other countries that allows citizens of those countries to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. In order to enter the U.S. under the VWP, the traveler must have a valid passport and an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) authorization prior to travel. In Arizona, a student who wishes to use the VWP must first determine if they are eligible. To be eligible for the VWP, a student must: 1. Be a citizen of a participating country. 2. Have a valid passport from the participating country. 3. Have a round trip ticket to the U.S. and a ticket out of the U.S. within 90 days. 4. Have an ESTA authorization. Once these requirements are fulfilled, the student can apply for the ESTA authorization online. Once the ESTA authorization is approved, the student then can enter the U.S. under the VWP. Upon arrival in the U.S., the student will need to complete the customs and immigration process. At this point, the student will be granted entry into the U.S. for up to 90 days. It is important to note that the VWP does not grant a student permission to stay in the U.S. for more than 90 days. After the 90-day period has ended, the student must either depart the U.S. or reapply for a visa. Furthermore, if a student overstays the allotted 90 days, he or she may face serious consequences, such as deportation.
