What is an F-1 OPT STEM extension?

An F-1 Optional Practical Training STEM Extension (OPT STEM Extension) is a program in California for students on the F-1 visa. The program offers an extension of time to complete certain STEM-related studies or internships. An F-1 visa is a type of student visa that allows a foreign student to stay in the United States to pursue an academic program. The OPT STEM Extension allows foreign students to remain in the United States beyond their F-1 visa’s expiration date. It is designed to give students the opportunity to gain work experience related to their field of study. The OPT STEM Extension extends the amount of time students can work in their respective STEM field by allowing one extension of 24 months. This can be in addition to the existing 12-month authorization. To qualify for the OPT STEM Extension, a student must be enrolled in a STEM degree program, have completed one year of studies, have an approved F-1 visa, have been employed in a qualifying STEM field for at least one year, and have continued to work in the same job for at least nine months. The F-1 OPT STEM Extension provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their field of study. This experience can be helpful in finding employment after graduation and in properly utilizing the knowledge gained during their academic studies.
