What is the difference between an F-1 and an M-1 visa?
The F-1 visa and the M-1 visa are both student visas for individuals wishing to study in the United States. However, there are several important distinctions between the two. The F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa reserved for full-time students who wish to pursue academic or language studies in the United States. Even though this visa is mainly used by students planning to attend universities, students may use it to attend high schools, preparatory programs, private elementary schools, and other academic institutions. The M-1 visa, on the other hand, is a non-immigrant visa reserved for full-time students who wish to pursue vocational studies in the United States. Unlike the F-1 visa, the M-1 visa does not allow its holders to attend universities. In addition, the F-1 visa holders are allowed to work part-time on campus and under certain circumstances off-campus. The M-1 visa holders are only allowed to work off-campus in special cases. Overall, the main difference between the F-1 visa and the M-1 visa is that the F-1 visa is reserved for academic programs while the M-1 visa is reserved for vocational programs. It is important to note, however, that both visas require holders to comply with the rules of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to remain in the country legally.
