What is the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)?
The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is a program administered by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It helps support educational institutions and exchange visitors who are in the country for educational purposes. SEVP’s mission is to provide and support a secure and compliant educational environment for international students, exchange visitors, and educational institutions. In Kansas, SEVP provides oversight and ensures that nonimmigrant foreign students admitted to the United States maintain a valid student visa status. This includes authorizing and monitoring educational institutions that have enrolled students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. SEVP approved educational institutions are required to report any changes related to foreign students, such as change of program, change of enrollment, program completion, and termination from the school, to SEVP within a certain time period. SEVP also provides guidance to international students and educational institutions aimed at making the student and exchange visitor process as efficient and secure as possible. This includes providing information related to federal immigration regulations, guidelines for completing SEVIS I-20 applications, and electronic reporting requirements. SEVP also provides training and resources to school officials, administrators, and other stakeholders involved in the student and exchange visitor process. SEVP is an important program that helps ensure international students continue to get the education they need in the United States while maintaining secure and compliant educational environments.
