What is an F-2 visa?

An F-2 visa is a type of visa used by foreign nationals who want to enter the state of Kansas for the purpose of studying. It is a nonimmigrant visa, meaning that it is not a path to permanent U.S. residency and does not provide an opportunity to work or be employed. The F-2 visa is commonly used by those who are already in the United States on an F-1 visa, which is issued to students who have been accepted into a full-time academic program. To qualify for the F-2 visa in Kansas, the student must already possess an F-1 visa, provide proof of enrollment in an approved educational or language program, and demonstrate that they have the financial means to cover tuition, fees, and all living expenses while studying in Kansas. The student’s spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 are eligible for an F-2 visa, as well. An F-2 visa does not allow a foreign student to participate in any form of employment in the United States. Those with an F-2 visa may engage in activities that are deemed to be recreational or cultural in nature, such as attending language classes, participating in recreational clubs, or sightseeing. Other activities, such as involvement in a business or paid services, are strictly prohibited.
