What is the F-1 CPT program?

The F-1 CPT program, also known as the Curricular Practical Training program, is a program designed to allow foreign students on F-1 visas to gain practical experience in their field of study in the state of Virginia. The program is designed for students to gain a better understanding of their chosen field of study by being exposed to actual hands-on experience. This can include paid or unpaid internships, practicums, cooperative education programs, and other alternatives. To be eligible, the student must have been enrolled in an approved school on an F-1 visa for at least one academic year and be in good academic standing. Students who are accepted into the program must receive authorization from their designated school official before they can start to participate. This authorization is known as the Employment Authorization Document (EAD). They must also receive permission from their academic advisor and internship sponsor. Once the authorization is granted, the student can begin the practical experience. The student must continue to maintain their F-1 visa status while participating in the F-1 CPT program. This means that the student must also continue to enroll full time in courses, must continue to make academic progress, and must follow the appropriate rules and regulations. The F-1 CPT program can be a great way for foreign students in Virginia to gain real-world experience in their field of study and gain a better understanding of their chosen field. It is important to remember, however, that the student must continue meet all requirements and stay in compliance with the program guidelines in order to maintain their F-1 visa status.
