What is the naturalization process?

The naturalization process is the way for non-citizens of the United States to become US citizens. To become a naturalized citizen, a person must first be a legal permanent resident of the US for at least five years. During this time they must have followed all laws, paid their taxes, and followed the general moral standards of the country. After five years, a person can submit their application to become a US citizen. This is known as the N-400 application. This application must be completed accurately and completely and include any requested documents and details. Once an application is accepted, the applicant must then attend an interview to supplement their application. During the interview, the applicant will be asked questions about their application, background, and knowledge of US history. If the application is approved, the applicant must then take an oath of allegiance to the United States. This is to signify their loyalty to the country, and from that point forward they are officially a US citizen. Finally, the applicant must attend a ceremony of naturalization. At this ceremony, they will receive their certificate of naturalization and officially become a US citizen. At this point, the person is free to apply for a US passport to travel around the world.
