What is a consular processing?

Consular processing is a method of acquiring citizenship or legal immigrant status in the United States. It is an alternative to applying for citizenship or legal immigration status from within the United States. Under consular processing, applicants are required to apply for citizenship or legal immigration status from a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. After applying, the embassy interviews the applicants and decides whether to approve or deny the application. If approved, the applicants receive a visa and can then travel to the United States. Consular processing is an important part of the immigration process for many individuals, including those who have no legal status in the United States or who have been denied permanent residency from within the United States. Consular processing can also be used to apply for family- or employment-based immigrant visas for persons intending to live and work in the United States. In Tennessee, the process of consular processing is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Applicants must submit all relevant documents and fees to apply. If you have questions about the process or need assistance, the USCIS Memphis Field Office and the U.S. consulate in Amsterdam are both available to provide assistance.
