What is a consular processing?

Consular processing is a method of applying for a US visa from a United States embassy or consulate abroad. This form of processing occurs when an individual outside the United States wants to obtain a visa and must go through a process to receive it. This is in contrast to an adjustment of status, where an individual is already present in the US and applies for a visa or change of status while still in the US. In Virginia, consular processing is often used for individuals seeking to become US citizens. To become a citizen through consular processing, an individual must first file Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. This application must be submitted to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If the application is approved, USCIS will send a letter informing the applicant about their eligibility for naturalization and will forward their application to the US embassy or consulate in their country of residence. At this point, the applicant must contact the US embassy or consulate and complete the necessary paperwork and pay the required fees. This includes submitting a passport, proof of residence in the country, and other documentation that is required. Once all the paperwork is complete, the applicant must show up for an in-person interview. During the interview, the applicant will be asked questions about their eligibility for US citizenship. After the interview has been successfully completed, the embassy or consulate will make a decision about the applicant’s application and grant the necessary visa or citizenship if approved. Individuals who receive the visa or citizenship must then enter the United States in order to complete the naturalization process and become a US citizen.
