What is the naturalization interview?

The naturalization interview is a process that allows foreign nationals to become United States citizens, also known as naturalization. Naturalization is the act of legally becoming a U.S. citizen after fulfilling all of the eligibility requirements, which involve living in the U.S. for a designated period of time and meeting other qualifications. The naturalization interview consists of a citizenship test, as well as an interview from a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer. This interview is conducted to ascertain whether the applicant is eligible to become a naturalized citizen. In Florida, naturalization interviews are administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and involve two parts: the initial interview and a re-interview. During the initial interview, the DHS officer will review the applicant’s application package and ask the applicant questions about the information provided in the application. The officer will also explain the naturalization process and rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens. In the re-interview, the DHS officer will ask the applicant additional questions to assess their understanding of English language and their knowledge of U.S. civics and history. The applicant is also required to demonstrate their ability to read, write and speak basic English. The DHS officer will then review the applicant’s responses, and if they are found eligible, the applicant will complete the naturalization process and become a U.S. citizen.
