How do I get a U.S. passport for a child?

In order to get a U.S. passport for a child, you must make sure that the child is a U.S. citizen by state or federal law. For a child born in California, both parents must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship at the time of the child’s birth. This proof can be either the parent’s U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport. If the child was born outside of the United States, one parent must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship, such as a U.S. passport or U.S. birth certificate. Other documents that might be accepted may include a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240), Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561), or Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570). Once the proper documents are collected, a passport application (DSP-11) must be completed and submitted. The application must include two identical passport photos of the child as well as the documents verifying U.S. Citizenship. The application and required documents should be submitted to either a passport acceptance facility or a Regional Passport Agency. When traveling abroad, it is recommended that the child have both a passport book and passport card, if possible. A passport book is required for all international air travel while a passport card can be used for re-entry into the United States at land and sea borders.
