What is the difference between a temporary visa and permanent residency?
A temporary visa is a document that allows someone from a foreign country to stay in the United States for a limited amount of time. It is typically granted to students, tourists, and international workers. The length of time a person can stay in the U.S. with a temporary visa varies depending on the visa type, but can range anywhere from a few days to a few years. The temporary visa must be renewed periodically in order to remain in the United States. On the other hand, permanent residency is a status that allows someone to live and work in the U.S. on a long-term basis. To receive permanent residency, an individual must receive either a green card, through the family-based immigration system, employment-based immigration, or refugee/asylum seekers. People with a green card can stay in the U.S. indefinitely, and can even apply to become a U.S. citizen after five years. In California, both temporary visas and permanent residency are regulated by the federal government. Immigration laws, however, can differ from state to state. It is important to research the immigration laws of the state in which you intend to reside.
