What is the naturalization oath?
The naturalization oath is an oath of allegiance to the United States of America that immigrants must take to become citizens. This oath must be taken during a naturalization ceremony, which is presided over by a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) official. The naturalization oath includes the immigrant promising “to support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Additionally, the immigrant must promise to “bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” The immigrant swears to “abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which [he or she] have heretofore been a subject or citizen.” The exact words of the naturalization oath may vary slightly from state to state, such as in Maryland. The naturalization oath is an important part of the naturalization process and shows that the immigrant is committed to their new country and is willing to abide by the laws of the United States. After taking the oath, the immigrant is officially a citizen of the United States.
