What is the process for obtaining a work permit?

In California, the process for obtaining a work permit is relatively straightforward. First, the applicant must be a non-citizen and present proof of their identity and age. Second, they must also provide proof that they have been admitted into the United States and have been granted either permanent or temporary residency status. Third, a signed statement from the applicant’s parent or legal guardian must be provided to verify that the applicant is allowed to work in the United States. Finally, applicants must submit a completed Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9) to their employer. The work permit itself is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. The employer is required to submit to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) a new Form I-9 each time a permit is updated or renewed. Additionally, employers are also responsible for verifying the employee’s identity and immigration status. In order to qualify for a work permit in California, the applicant must provide evidence of their eligibility to work in the United States. This can be done by documenting their legal immigration status, such as a valid Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Card, or valid visa. The applicant must also show proof of employment and provide income verification. Being granted a work permit in California requires that certain criteria be met, however, the process is relatively simple. After the applicant has collected the necessary documents and proved their eligibility, they must submit an application to the USCIS and will be issued a permit if all criteria have been met.
