What is the process for applying for asylum?

The process for applying for asylum in Maryland involves submitting an application to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). An individual applying for asylum must have a “well-founded fear of persecution” based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group in order to be eligible. The application must be submitted on Form I-589, Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. The form will ask questions about an applicant’s background and reasons for seeking asylum. Supporting evidence such as documentation must also be included in the application. Once the application is received, an individual will be scheduled for an interview with an asylum officer. During the interview process, the individual will present their case to the officer, who will evaluate the application and the supporting evidence. If asylum is granted, the individual will be allowed to remain in the United States. If the application is denied, the individual will have the opportunity to appeal the decision. In cases of denial, applicants may also be granted withholding of removal, which allows them to stay in the United States but does not provide them with the same rights and benefits as an asylum recipient.
