What is the process for applying for naturalization?
The process for applying for naturalization in Illinois is relatively straightforward. First, an individual must meet the requirements to become a U.S. citizen. These requirements include being at least 18 years old, having been a Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States for at least five years, and demonstrating the required knowledge of English and U.S. history and government. The next step is to submit the Application for Naturalization (Form N-400). This can be done through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application is reviewed by an immigration officer and, if approved, a fingerprint appointment is scheduled. The fingerprinting procedure is conducted to help verify the applicant’s identity. After the application and fingerprints are completed, the candidate will be scheduled to interview with the USCIS. In some cases, an applicant may be chosen to interview with a U.S. immigration judge. At the interview, the applicant’s background, U.S. knowledge, and qualifications for naturalization are evaluated. The last step is to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Once this is complete, an individual is officially a U.S. citizen. As a citizen, they will have the same rights and responsibilities as any other U.S. citizen. This includes the right to vote and serve on a jury.
