What is a re-entry permit?

A re-entry permit is a document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to certain U.S. citizens and permanent residents, allowing them to travel abroad for a period of time without losing their right to re-enter the country. Re-entry permits are especially important in Virginia, since it is close to many countries that people may visit for both business and leisure. When a person travels abroad, they must fill out an application for a re-entry permit with USCIS. This application requires details on the person’s identity, purpose of travel, and where they will be traveling to. The application also requires the person to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. Once approved, the permit is normally valid for two years. A re-entry permit allows a person to visit other countries and return to the U.S. without having to apply for a visa each time they re-enter. However, it does not provide any work authorization or extend the length of time a person can stay abroad. A person may have to renew the permit if they are planning to stay outside the U.S. for an extended period of time. Overall, a re-entry permit is a valuable document for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who travel abroad frequently. It is important to remember though that having a re-entry permit does not guarantee admission back into the United States, as U.S. Customs and Border Protection still has the authority to refuse a person’s entry at any time.
