How do I become a U.S. permanent resident?

Becoming a U.S. permanent resident is a long process, but it’s not impossible with proper guidance. In the state of Washington, the first step is to identify yourself as someone who is eligible to apply, such as a permanent resident of another country, a family member of a U.S. citizen, a spouse or fiancé of a U.S. citizen, or a refugee or asylee. You’ll then need to determine which kind of visa application is appropriate for your situation, such as a green card lottery, a family-based visa, an employment-based visa, or a humanitarian visa. Once you have all the necessary paperwork, you’ll need to file the appropriate paperwork with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, or USCIS. Depending on the type of visa you are applying for, you may also need to attend an interview. Finally, if your application is approved, you will need to complete a swearing-in ceremony and be issued a Permanent Resident Card, also known as a “green card”. This card will grant you permission to legally stay in the United States, work and potentially apply for U.S. citizenship. While the process of becoming a U.S. permanent resident can seem daunting and confusing, the most important step is understanding the options that are available to you and working with a qualified immigration attorney who can help you through the process.
