What is Immigration Law?

Immigration Law is the laws and regulations that govern the entry, residence, and removal of foreign nationals, or non-citizens, in the state of Washington. These laws determine who may enter the United States, for what purpose, and for what length of time; when a foreign national must leave the United States and/or register with the US government; and who may be removed from the United States. Washington Immigration Law is regulated by the federal government and enforced by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These federal laws set the overall framework for how foreign nationals can arrive and enter the United States, as well as how their presence in Washington and the United States must be managed. Within this framework, the state of Washington is able to provide additional guidance and regulations for immigration, such as state-specific requirements related to eligibility for particular visas. Immigration Law also covers Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and other special status given to foreign nationals in the United States. TPS allows foreign nationals from certain designated countries to remain in the US temporarily when conditions in their country are unsafe, such as severe natural disasters or civil war. DACA allows some foreign nationals who arrived in the US as children to remain legally in the US without fear of deportation. Immigration Law also covers the enforcement process for those who are not in compliance with the law. This includes a variety of enforcement actions, such as deportations and removals, as well as criminal charges. In Washington, Immigration Law is a complex area that affects a wide range of people. It is important to understand the rules and regulations governing foreign nationals in the state in order to comply with the laws and ensure the rights of all individuals are respected.
