How does an immigrant obtain a work permit?

In Washington, immigrants who want to work in the state need to obtain a work permit. To do this, immigrants must first apply for a social security number at their local Social Security Administration office. After they have been issued a social security number, they must apply for a work permit through United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application process requires them to submit the following documents, including a completed I-765 form, a valid passport, proof of their legal immigration status in the United States, two passport-style photos, and a money order or check as payment for the application fee. Once their application is complete, they will need to make an appointment at their local USCIS office. At the appointment, they will be asked for additional information and may have to take a biometrics appointment to provide fingerprints and/or a photograph. Once USCIS approves the work permit, immigrants will be able to legally work in Washington. The work permit is valid for two years and will need to be renewed before it expires in order for immigrants to maintain their legal right to work in the state.
